Forestry and Agricultural Residues CFB Power Plant Boiler
Forestry Residues including wood chips, wood pellets, sawdust, bark from forestry operations and processing. Agricultural residues mainly include straw, sugar bagasse, palm kernel shells. All these can be burning fuel for CFB power plant boiler to generate steam or hot water.
In the current overview paper, various issues related to the combustion of agricultural residues are discussed. Attention has been given to the problems associated with the properties of the residues such as low bulk density, low ash melting points, high volatile matter contents and the presence of nitrogen, sulfur, chlorine and sometimes high moisture contents. Consequently the issues discussed include densification, the combustion mechanisms of agricultural residues, problems of low melting point of ash such as agglomeration and fouling, emissions and co-combustion. Further, design considerations of facilities for the combustion of agricultural residues are discussed.
Typical large scale combustion technologies available for biomass co-firing are pulverized coal power plant and fluidised bed combustion. The circulating fluidised bed (CFB) is available on the scale of several hundreds of MWe and can typically achieve high conversion efficiencies with high co-firing shares.
Technologies currently used for dedicated biomass firing are: fluidised bed combustion, pile burning, various types of grate firing (stationary, moving, vibrating) and suspension firing. These technologies show different characteristics in terms of feed stock pre-treatment requirement and fuel flexibility (particle size, moisture content, alkali content), investment and operating cost, typical size range and conversion efficiency. In this fact sheet the fluidised bed technology is the basis as this technology is available in relative large size range up to about 100 MWe for BFB and up to 350 MWe for CFB and as it shows relatively high conversion efficiencies up to 36% (BFB) and 42%.
